Things to do
America Lodge is in a beautiful part of England full of local attractions and a very convenient location from which to range further afield.
We are close to the historic market towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford ('the finest stone town in England'), each providing plenty of opportunities for shopping, sightseeing and places to visit. Discover Rutland provides the most comprehensive source for what's available in Rutland.
If you decide to eat out, there many choices,
ranging from excellent local pubs in the nearby villages to the renowned
Hambleton Hall on the shores of Rutland Water.
Rutland is a great place for outdoor activities: walking (part of the Macmillan Way runs past America Lodge), cycling, birdwatching, fly-fishing, sailing, water sports, riding, golf. Petrolheads might even be attracted by what's on offer at Rockingham Motor Speedway.
Equipment for outdoor activities can often be
hired locally. However, if bringing your own, there's ample storage space at
America Lodge - even for a boat!
There are lots of opportunities, too, for those who want more relaxed days out: nearby Oakham has a fine castle (medieval hall) and a good museum; you can find plenty of galleries and antiques shops in Uppingham and Stamford; Rutland Open Air Theatre runs an acclaimed Shakespeare season at Tolethorpe Hall; railway buffs might find the renowned Oakham signal box worth a visit and there's a working railway museum, Rocks by Rail, at Cottesmore.
Rutland, of course, also hosts a number of major international events: the Birdwatching Fair, Rockingham Horse Trials and Burghley Horse Trials.
